Elections Matter

Why Should I Vote?

Why should you vote? Why wouldn’t you?

You should vote even though voting is not a requirement because we the people have a voice and we should make our voice known, and we are a people with the freedom to do just that. Not to mention our vote matters.

Don't think that your one vote won't matter. If we all had the mindset that we were only one person, which equals one vote, who would end up being elected?

Local Elections Matter

I think many people either don’t vote, or they only vote for what they consider to be a “big” election, such as the presidential election, which of course is important, but really, all elections are equally important.

You have a voice, and a constitutional right to vote, and as Christians we should be some of the main people out there exercising our right to vote and fulfill that, “We the people,” as stated in our U.S. Declaration of Independence.

As Christians we have access to God, and we vote as we are lead by Him to vote, which is very important.

Rather it’s a federal or local election, there are times when there is absolutely no one on the ballot that we like, but that shouldn’t stop us from voting. Besides, God can move upon the hearts of anyone, and end up using the very individual that you just knew would be the worse person for a given position or office. We’re not putting our trust in people, even if they’re born again believers, or they’re standing for biblical principles, we put our trust in God.

Do Your Homework And Pray

On the topic of voting, yes you should definitely vote, but beforehand, you also should do your homework, not just choose some random candidate.

Read about the candidates - their political party, goals, vision for if they’re elected, etc., and even pray about it. As soon as we know an election is coming up, we should be praying - for all the candidates, and for guidance on who to vote for. In all honesty, I can’t really say I’ve done that like I should, but I am working on intentionally taking time out to pray for every election, rather it seems big or small.

On the point about doing your homework and actually taking the time to vote, I thought about this quote I learned by Edmund Burke, who, according to Wikipedia, was an “Irish philosopher, politician and statesman.” He said this,

“The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing.”

This quote really doesn’t need explaining but let me just say as citizens of Heaven, who also have citizenship in this present world, we have a responsibility to involve ourselves in our culture, impact this world for Christ, and let Him use us even through the avenue of voting.

Doing your homework, and taking the time to research the candidates, helps you to make an informed vote, as well as prayer.

Which is worse, not voting, or voting haphazardly?

I hope you get out and vote at your local election, whether it be a state or federal election. Do your homework, pray, and go vote. Voting matters, and your vote matters.
