National Day of Prayer

National Day of Prayer is coming up this Thursday, May 3rd, 2018.

For anyone who may not know, it’s a day where hundreds of people will be in prayer for our nation. Our government, the church, families, the military, and many other areas concerning our nation.

As stated on the National Day of Prayer website,

“...It was created in 1952 by a joint resolution of the United States Congress, and signed into law by President Harry S. Truman. In 1988, the law was unanimously amended by both the House and the Senate and signed into law by President Ronald Reagan on Thursday, May 5, 1988, designating the first Thursday of May as a day of national prayer. Every president since 1952 has signed a National Day of Prayer proclamation.”

This annual day of prayer is an important time that we pray for our nation on the same exact day. That’s the coolest thing to me - not only is my local assembly praying, but so are many, many others. We’re all on our faces in prayer before God on behalf of our nation.

There’s just something about knowing that there are so many others that are apart of the Body of Christ, across the world, let alone the state that you and I live in. When we get to heaven it’s going to be amazing to see the thousands upon thousands of brothers and sisters in Christ all together.

Every year there is always a theme and a central verse. This year the theme is, “Unity,” and the verse is found in Ephesians 4:3. It reads,

“ Making every effort to keep the unity of the Spirit through the bond of peace.”

Looking back in history, many of our founding fathers sought the Lord in prayer for our country, and we should do the same, on a regular basis. An example that quickly comes to mind is Benjamin Franklin’s appeal for prayer at the Constitutional Convention in 1787.

From studying history, I’ve always remembered when Franklin stated,

“I have lived, Sir, a long time, and the longer I live, the more convincing proofs I see of this truth- that God governs in the affairs of men. And if a sparrow cannot fall to the ground without his notice, is it probable that an empire can rise without his aid? We have been assured, Sir, in the sacred writings, that “except the Lord build the House they labour in vain that build it.” I firmly believe this; and I also believe that without his concurring aid we shall succeed in this political building no better than the Builders of Babel: We shall be divided by our little partial local interests; our projects will be confounded, and we ourselves shall become a reproach and bye word down to future ages. “

(I found this quote directly from a particular article, and you can check it out here.)

My favorite part has always been, "God governs in the affairs of men. And if a sparrow cannot fall to the ground without his notice, is it probable that an empire can rise without his aid?"

A big part of the greatness of America is heavily attributed to prayer, and the biblical principles that our founding fathers applied in the forming of our nation and its documents, such as the Declaration of Independence. Prayer and seeking guidance from God is critical in our personal lives, and also for the well-being and growth of a nation. Prayer literally invites and gives God permission to move on our behalf. Things most definitely happen when we pray and go before God in humility.

A scripture that always comes to mind when thinking of praying for our nation is 2 Chronicles 7:14.

"If my people, which are called by my name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways; then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land.”

I hope we all pray earnestly for the Body of Christ at large, and our nation, with great fervor.

I wanna leave you with this powerful song, which is basically 2 Chronicles 7:14 but in song. Be Blessed.
